The Phoenix Skills Development Centre is the cornerstone of this commitment. It provides apprenticeships and structured learning across composites, joinery, upholstery, electrical systems, and metalwork. Trainees work alongside seasoned artisans, gaining real-world experience while building the confidence to succeed in the marine industry.

Our training programmes are designed to:

Phoenix works closely with the Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services Sector Education and Training Authority (merSETA) and other industry organisations to ensure our programmes meet national skills priorities. These partnerships help us expand training capacity, secure accreditation, and prepare apprentices with qualifications that have lasting value.
By aligning with industry and education partners, we close skills gaps not only in our own yard but across the wider boatbuilding sector.

Towards the Phoenix Academy
Our long-term vision is the Phoenix Academy — a formal expansion of the Phoenix Skills Development Centre into a dedicated training hub for the marine industry. The Academy will increase capacity, strengthen our ability to serve the industry, and expand opportunities for people in our community.
Its mission is simple: to bridge the gap between potential and opportunity, creating a pipeline of skilled South African boatbuilders who can contribute to both local and global industries.
