The Phoenix Skills Development Centre is the foundation of our commitment to people. Established to address the skills gap in South Africa’s marine industry, it creates pathways for individuals to move from potential to professional.
At its core, the centre is about boatbuilding training in Cape Town that combines classroom learning, practical workshops, and hands-on experience in the Phoenix yard. Apprentices work alongside seasoned artisans, learning not only technical skills but also the discipline, safety standards, and pride in workmanship that define quality boat building.
Why the Skills Development Centre matters
Boatbuilding is a craft that requires precision, patience, and experience. South Africa has no shortage of talent, but many lack opportunities to access the industry. The Phoenix Skills Development Centre bridges this gap by offering:
- Entry-level apprenticeships for unemployed youth and career changers.
- Multi-disciplinary training across composites, joinery, upholstery, electrics, and metalwork.
- Mentorship from experienced artisans and project managers.
- Formal pathways into permanent roles within Phoenix Marine Manufacturing.
By creating structured opportunities, the centre ensures that the marine industry has a steady pipeline of trained, motivated, and skilled people.
A structured approach to learning
The Phoenix Skills Development Centre delivers a curriculum built around three stages:
- Foundation
Apprentices learn the fundamentals of workplace safety, tool use, material handling, and basic boatbuilding principles.
- Rotation
Trainees rotate through workshops — composites, joinery, CNC, upholstery, metalwork, and electrical systems — gaining a broad understanding of the interconnected nature of marine manufacturing.
- Specialisation
With guidance from mentors, apprentices focus on one discipline, developing advanced skills that prepare them for long-term careers.
This structured approach ensures that every trainee not only becomes a skilled artisan but also understands how their work fits into the bigger picture of building a yacht.
Supported by industry partnerships
The centre works in partnership with the Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services Sector Education and Training Authority (merSETA) and other education bodies to ensure that apprenticeships are aligned with national standards. Vendor-led sessions from global suppliers bring in the latest technologies, ensuring that our team remains current with international trends.
This collaboration between industry, education, and the yard provides trainees with both credibility and employability.

The mission of the Phoenix Skills Development Centre is twofold:

By achieving both, the centre ensures that Phoenix Marine Manufacturing continues to thrive while contributing to the broader ecosystem of Cape Town’s boatbuilding hub.
Towards the Phoenix Academy
The centre is also the foundation for a long-term vision: the Phoenix Academy. This will expand our training capacity, formalise qualifications, and broaden access for people across South Africa who wish to enter the marine industry.
The Phoenix Academy will represent a new standard for marine training — rooted in the success of our current programmes but scaled to serve the industry as a whole.
