From vision to foundation
Phoenix Marine Manufacturing was founded in 2013 by Clinton Johns, an engineer, entrepreneur, and lifelong sailor with a passion for pushing the boundaries of marine design. With decades of experience in advanced composites, resins, and boatbuilding systems, Clinton recognised an opportunity to create a different kind of yard — one that combined technical precision with the artistry of true craftsmanship. His vision was clear: to establish a marine manufacturer in Cape Town capable of building vessels that would stand the test of time on every ocean.
The first Phoenix catamaran
From the outset, Phoenix focused on innovation and uncompromising quality. The yard’s first project was a 50-foot sailing catamaran that showcased this ethos. The boat quickly drew attention for its strength, elegance, and forward-thinking systems. It became the foundation of what would later be recognised internationally as the X5 catamaran — but at its core, it remained a Phoenix Marine creation, defined by the yard’s standards of build integrity and craftsmanship.
Growing into larger builds
Building on the success of the 50-foot platform, Phoenix went on to develop and construct the 60-foot sailing catamaran, further cementing its reputation as a builder of luxury, seagoing vessels. Each project raised the bar in terms of structural innovation, advanced composites, and interior refinement, while maintaining the company’s commitment to serviceability and reliability offshore.
Rooted in Cape Town’s maritime culture
Cape Town is the largest catamaran building hub in the Southern Hemisphere and home to a vibrant network of artisans, engineers, and suppliers. It is a city shaped by powerful winds and open seas — a place where boats are tested against real-world conditions before they ever cross an ocean.
By situating our yard in Atlantis, just outside Cape Town, Phoenix became part of this ecosystem. We draw on its legacy of craftsmanship while contributing new skills and opportunities to a community often overlooked by the broader industry.
Our people, our pride
Phoenix’s story is also the story of its people. Many of our artisans did not come from yacht-building families. They joined through training programmes, mentorship, and the belief that they could build a career in marine manufacturing. From laminators and joiners to electricians and upholsterers, our team members grow with the company, and their pride is visible in every detail of our yachts.
The establishment of our Skills Development Centre formalised this culture, creating pathways for apprentices, upskilling workers, and ensuring that the next generation of South African boatbuilders inherits both technical knowledge and a strong ethos of quality.
Innovation with purpose
From our earliest days, Phoenix has embraced innovation not for its own sake but for the value it delivers to owners and crews. We were among the first South African yards to integrate smart boat technology, colour-coded electrical systems, hybrid propulsion readiness, and modular CNC processes into everyday builds. Our vessels are modern yet practical, forward-looking yet serviceable.
